On July 15, 2021 FEMA made a federal disaster declaration for Michigan (DR-4607), designating Washtenaw and Wayne County for federal disaster assistance. Your community, being in one of those counties, may have experienced impacts from the flooding events and if so, may already be carrying out assessment, inspection, and repair permitting for damaged buildings as your citizens begin to recover. We are getting in touch to let you know FEMA and the Michigan Department of Environment, Great Lakes, and Energy (EGLE) have been coordinating how best to support your community through the challenging times ahead.
We understand that most of the damages were from basement flooding and sewage back up. For this reason, we do not anticipate many substantially damaged structures, with most damages occurring at basement level. Although substantial damage (SD) may be minimal, all potentially SD structures should still be inspected and be permitted in accordance with your community’s building code requirements. Please let me know if you are seeing any other trends in your flood recovery efforts and if we can assist in anyway.
I have attached a few documents that might be helpful to you and your citizens. Please share.
