Trash Service
The City of Ypsilanti contracts with Stevens Disposal for curbside trash collection. This service includes a 96-gallon trash cart on wheels for weekly collection of solid waste to single-family, duplex, and triplex residential properties.
Schedule
Trash pickup is weekly, on the same day each week. To ensure pick up, please have your rubbish at the curb by 6:00 a.m. or the night before your collection day. Occasionally there may be a delay in trash service due to holidays. View the Stevens Disposal trash pickup schedule here, and the holiday service schedule here.
How to use the cart:
- Items placed outside of the cart will not be collected.
- Items placed on top of the cart will result in the entire cart (and item) being skipped.
- Items in the cart should be bagged.
- Carts should be placed four feet away from obstructions like other carts/bins/bags, trees, fire hydrants, etc, and not underneath any tree limbs or signs.
Bulk item pickup:
- Pick-up for all bulk items will take place on Fridays and will need to be scheduled in advance by contacting Stevens Disposal by email at bulk@stevensdisposal.com or calling 734-279-2611. One bulk item per week is free, additional items incur a cost of $20. More information about bulk item pickup is available on this page.
Other Information:
- Double trash week in spring and in fall will continue!
- People who live alone and have issues with their health that preclude their ability to roll the large cart to the curb can apply for an accommodation. Please email or call the DPW to begin that process.
- We have been conducting route audits to optimize efficiency. Any necessary changes to garbage collection will be communicated to those involved. Changes may be made for such reasons as:
- Setout regularly in excess of the permitted amount.
- Property access issues (obstacles to the truck, unsafe staging areas, or private property driveways)
- Improper commercial pickups:
- If trash has been dumped on the public sidewalk, particularly in the downtown area, Stevens has frequently picked that up as a public service. That is outside their contract and is also outside of their ability to continue with the new trucks. Those who place trash on the public sidewalks will be encouraged to contract with a private hauler for proper sanitary disposal.
- Generally speaking, commercial and multifamily properties are better served by contracted waste haulers, due to the limitation our contracted hauler has on the volume of refuse they can pick up in a day and the volume of waste produced by these locations.
If you are located in the downtown, you are eligible to participate in the Downtown Development Authority's dumpster service. The DDA regulates three dumpster enclosures in Downtown Ypsilanti. They are located in the N. Huron, S. Huron, and N. Adams parking lots. All enclosures require a code for access. The DDA offers restaurant, commercial, and residential rates. All invoices are billed in four month cycles. If you are interested in purchasing access to one of the dumpsters, please email Elize@ypsilantidda.org. More information can be found on the DDA website here.
Worried that you may need more than one cart? You can rent a second cart directly from Stevens.
Wondering what to do with your old trash can? You can reuse it for yard waste, or you can put it in the cart. Most cans will fit in the cart but some may have to be broken down. If you would like a label sticker for your newly-converted yard waste bin, they may be picked up from City Hall.
Want to put your address on the cart? Go for it, just don't cover up the logo or serial number.
Why the change? Uniform garbage containers and automated side loader technology are the new standard for garbage pick-up. This change will help prevent worker injuries, decrease litter, and help decrease the number of vermin.
I used to be picked up on Fridays, what happened? Beginning the week of September 29th, households that had their trash and recycling picked up on Fridays moved to Thursday pickup for garbage, recycling, and yard waste.
I'm in/manage a multifamily property that has 7 units but I only got three carts, obviously I need more than that? The maximum pickup allowed by the City contract is 3 carts, equivalent to the previous limit of 9, 33-gallon trash bags/cans for a three-unit property. If your property is regularly generating more than that volume of trash, regardless of the number of units, type of occupancy, or number of persons regularly at the address, we recommend exploring dumpster service.

Three units or more may set out their three carts and nine bags of trash.
When is "double trash limit" week?
The City provides two "double trash limit" weeks per year, one in spring and one in late summer. Sign up to receive emailed City notices here.
